It’s that glorious time of month again when people all over the world are receiving and opening little black boxes of bookish delight! Must be Fairy Loot time! January’s box theme was “Talk Faerie to me” perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas and Holly Black.

We were asked by the lovely Anissa to contribute to this months box with two different fae themed lipbalms each representing a different side of the the Fae courts.

The two most prominent classification of fairies of English, Irish and Scottish folk lore are the Seelie and Unseelie courts. The Seelie are usually classed as being the “light” fae who are more likely to interact benevolently with humans and although they’re mischievous are more inclined to be fair in face and their judgments of others. The Unseelie are the more darkly inclined fairies who do not need to be insulted to bring down their wrath. They love to cause suffering and torment, delighting in kidnapping travellers and keeping any they take a liking to as pets…or lunch.

Both the Seelie and Unseelie are portrayed in many different ways, in the Shadowhunter series for example both courts are fickle and dangerous, the only main difference being their beauty and customs. For this lip balm we wanted to make sure that the two different flavours represented the Fae court perfectly.

The Seelie court is represented in lip balm form with a crisp, tangy candy apple flavour to go with the tart attitude and sweet faces.

“A mortal had woven it, a man who, having caught sight of the Seelie queen, had spent the remainder of his short life weaving depictions of her. He had died of starvation, raw, red fingers staining the final tapestry”

The Unseelie Court lip balm is honey flavoured, a perfect paralell as honey, very much like the fae of the Unseelie Court can be can be floral, fruity, smoky, woody, spicy, nutty or earthy. It can smell fresh as grass or pungent like aged cheese. It can look nearly clear as water or dark as molasses.

“Unseelie dreams make unseelie fae.”
